In this collection of deeply personal stories, moms share their experiences with depression after having a baby – what happened, what helped, and what they wish they had known. Postpartum depression affects at least 1 in 10 new mothers – and probably more, because many don't seek treatment.

Our storytellers thought they were bad mothers and were ashamed they didn't feel happier, the way new moms are supposed to. Most were scared to seek treatment, but looking back, they wish they had done so sooner. Some didn't realize, at first, that what they were feeling was depression and not the baby blues.

Their most common piece of advice? If you're a new mom and feeling depressed, ask for help. You're not alone, being depressed is not your fault, and depression is not something you can control. It's also better for your baby if you get treatment.
