In 2019 we covered breaking news about infant sleeper recalls, how to protect your children during measles outbreaks, the latest findings on screen time and brain development, and a pledge by carmakers to prevent hot-car deaths, among dozens of other stories.
But some articles in particular stood out for our our site readers. Here are our four most-read stories of 2019:
CBD is probably not safe during pregnancy: CBD seems to be everywhere these days – from body lotions and oils to gummies and chocolates – and so are claims about this cannabis derivative's supposed health benefits. But there have been almost no scientific studies on whether CBD is safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding, and the vast majority of CBD products aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We wrote about the safety concerns surrounding CBD use during pregnancy and while nursing. A couple of months later, the FDA clarified that its warnings against using marijuana while pregnant or breastfeeding also apply to products containing CBD.
Plant-based meat isn't great for your pregnancy diet: 2019 saw the explosion of plant-based, meat-like substances onto the market, such as the Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger. While ads for these faux-meat products makes them sound healthy, one nutritionist we spoke to said pregnant women are probably better off just eating the real thing. Fake meat is highly processed and full of complicated ingredients, said integrative dietitian Samantha Schleiger. If you want to eat less meat, try substituting some of it for more vegetables, she said.
Clear drapes help women connect with c-section birth: Given the high rate of c-section deliveries in America, hospitals are coming up with new ways to help parents feel more involved in the birthing process. One is to allow women and their partners to view part of the c-section through a clear drape, rather than blocking their view with a traditional solid drape. With a clear drape, you still won't see the first part of the surgery, but you get to witness the moment your baby is delivered.
Vaping is dangerous during pregnancy and around kids: We've known for years that smoking is dangerous for pregnant women and that secondhand smoke from cigarettes is bad for children. But many parents don't realize that vaping, or using e-cigarettes, is dangerous for pregnant women and children too. We delved into the latest research on vaping trends and explained why experts say it's best to avoid vaping while pregnant and when around children.
