Of all the ornaments on our Christmas tree, my most favorite are the ones that are handmade. Handmade Cinnamon Ornaments have been on our tree since we were first married, and every few years I get to make more! Now it's become a tradition, and my kids absolutely love being in the kitchen with me...choosing "their" cookie cutters, watching me roll out the ornament dough, and especially pressing down the cookie cutter with all of their might. And I love watching them do it.
Everyone loves making these! Whether it's your toddlers, preschoolers, or big kids sitting up at the countertop, or laughing with your mom, sisters, or friends, it's fun to get together and make these simple and adorable ornaments. If you have a baby at your house, think how fun it would be to mark one of their first Christmases with a darling gingerbread man! You could even press one of their little thumb prints into the center, and scratch in the date with a toothpick. What a treasure! You could also use a stamp to add an initial or name, which would be so fun for your kids and family, or someone you plan to give it to as a gift.
One of the most wonderful things about making these ornaments is that they fill your home with the most pungent and delightful aroma of cinnamon, and that will continue once they're hung on your tree. Their simplicity is also part of their charm, with only two ingredients and a few tools to make them. If you're looking for an inexpensive way to trim your tree, this is a great option! For around $5, you should be able to get between 10-14 ornaments (small to medium-size) out of one batch.
I have used baker's twine, jute, and ribbon to tie them on the tree, and loved all of them!
TIP: If the dough is too crumbly, add a little more apple sauce, and if it's too wet, add more cinnamon. I usually end up needing to add a little more apple sauce.
HOMEMADE CINNAMON ORNAMENTS
- 3/4 cup applesauce
- 1 c. + 2 T. cinnamon (1 bottle-4.12 ounces) McCormick® Cinnamon, Ground)
- Supplies needed:
- Cookie cutters
- Drinking straw
- Ribbon or Twine
- Preheat your oven to 200°F. Mix applesauce and cinnamon in small bowl until a smooth ball of dough is formed. (You may need use your hands to incorporate all of the cinnamon.) *I ended up adding a little more applesauce--mine was still a little crumbly. Using about 1/4 of the dough at a time, roll dough to 1/4-inch to 1/3-inch thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap. Peel off top sheet of plastic wrap. Cut dough into desired shapes with 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters. Make a hole at top of ornament with drinking straw. Place ornaments on baking sheet.
- Bake 2 1/2 hours. Cool ornaments on wire rack. (Or, to dry ornaments at room temperature, carefully place them on wire rack. Let stand 1 to 2 days or until thoroughly dry, turning occasionally.)
- Insert ribbon (I used bakers twine!) through holes and tie to hang on your tree!
