Do you know what's worse than being stuck inside all winter with small kids?
Being stuck inside, in winter, with a child in a full leg cast. I have the solution though! We've found great toys to entertain a toddler in a cast.
I'm going to share them with you, but first, here's the background story you're dying to know.
My almost 3-year-old daughter went to a birthday party at one of those indoor trampoline parks. She was happily (barely) bouncing along when a bigger girl hopped on by. My daughter fell and poof! she ended up in a full leg cast. She's lucky in that she only has a small fracture on her tibia and will have her cast removed after 6 weeks. She cannot bear weight on it, and the most she can do aside from crawling is stand there and hold on to something. She's been great about following those rules, and they haven't stopped her from having a dance party now and again. Here she is putting on a (dangerous) performance for her baby sister:
We are 22 days out from having her cast removed, and she has been a serious champ. It has hardly slowed her down and she's only complained a handful of times about wanting her leg to be better and wanting the cast off. Had it been me I feel I would have complained a lot more, and as her mom and chief officer in charge of carrying her everywhere, I've done my fair share of complaining already.
I feel thankful that the injury isn't worse, Ali is being a superstar, and that we aren't missing gorgeous weather. We have been relying on some old and new toys to entertain our toddler in her cast. Here are our favorites:
1. Play-Doh Town Hairdresser and Bird
2. Piggy Paint Nail Polish (Amazon)
3. Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Home (Fisherprice.com)
4. Lego DUPLO Creative Animals (Amazon)
5. Melissa & Doug Pets Cube Puzzle (Amazon)
6. Pip Squeaks Markers (Amazon)
7. Little Cosmetics Pretend Makeup Essential Set (Amazon)
Want to see what it's like living with a princess in a full leg cast? Here she is in all her glory:
Here's what a full leg cast looks like. She wanted pink but I convinced her to get purple since the darker color would show less wear.
She was so exhausted from the long process of getting her cast on that she fell asleep on the walk home. I am so thankful we live a walk away from one of the best children's hospitals on the East Coast.
She was excited to be trapped behind the baby gate at first. Then she realized that she wouldn't be allowed to climb up or down the stairs during this whole ordeal. She was not happy. The girl loves her stairs!
She declared herself a mermaid since she can't walk. She crawls and glides everywhere while reminding me she's a mermaid.
Her cast has not stopped her from wanting to try on her new summer dresses. She did a full on fashion show despite the cast.
Since she only has 3 pairs of pants that fit over her cast, she's been wearing nightgowns to bed. I don't think she'll ever go back to regular pajamas.
She has loved playing with all of her new toys, but her new Play-Doh Town tools are her favorite.
