The best time to start is when your baby begins to develop a real desire to communicate. Babies can usually learn to sign before they learn to talk, so getting started early on is a great idea
Some babies can learn simple signs as young as 6 months. But your baby may not have the hand control to be able to sign back to you until she's 8 or 9 months old. You can start teaching signs to your baby when you think she's ready – even if she can't sign back yet.
Once your baby can sign her needs to you, communicating is easier for everybody. Keep talking to your baby while you're signing – that way she'll learn to talk with her voice as well as her hands.
