Disasters are natural phenomena in which children find it difficult to make sense and often cause and effect relationships. As a result of the lack of knowledge and awareness of disasters, scientific studies show that children are detained in charge of disasters and thus they enter into pedagogical problems. Unfortunately, the earthquake is one of these disasters and a serious problem for our country. On the anniversary of the August 17 earthquake, we will talk about what you can teach children about the earthquake and what precautions you can take with them.

How do children perceive the earthquake?

Children, like adults, are afraid of earthquakes. However, they have difficulty understanding the earthquake as a natural phenomenon that we, like adults, are out of control. Moreover, children are concerned that adults who protect themselves and are completely confident cannot help themselves.

Preschool children think that this catastrophe happens because of a thought or behavior that their parents do not approve.

School-age children can understand natural phenomena. However, they may perceive such a catastrophe as punishment for their previous misconduct.

The perception of the earthquake in adolescents is quite similar to that of adults. However, they may be angry that this disaster has happened on their own.

Take precautions with children…

Make an action plan with your child, about where to meet in the event of an earthquake. For example, this meeting place can be a point near the exit or a safe place close to all rooms. You should also identify important phones and addresses, even write them on a card and carry them over the child in case they forget.

Be careful not to place the beds on the edge of the glass in your child's room. Avoid placing heavy objects on high shelves. You should also leave the doors of the rooms open at night and place items such as lockers and tables in a way that does not prevent exits. You should secure the book shelves and cupboards to the wall in case of tipping and falling.

You should prepare a bag in which you can put your child's immediate personal needs. First aid kit, flashlight and spare batteries, battery-powered radio, whistle, some money, phone card, water, biscuits, a few pieces of clothes (sweaters, pants, underwear) that your child will use after the earthquake. These materials will support your child until help arrives after the earthquake.

During the earthquake, everyone must protect themselves; No matter where we are on the street or indoors, our first move is to find a safe place and take a lean-and-hold position, so that we can protect our head and neck, tell your child about it and practice at home. Explain to your children that you can take this position by kneeling next to solid items such as lockers, tables, armchairs at home or in any indoor space. In places such as streets or parks, take this position and make sure that there are no objects, such as poles, trees or the like.
